Paul Klee (note to Robin& a new quote to come) Thinking about a poignant moment of a dream, a childhood memory, a reminder from nature or idea from my mind s eye inspires me to paint it. What idea starts out to have meaning becomes a process as form, color, motion and surface textures develop, combined with memories to create a new visual of that original thought. Marcel Proust Artist Statement I have been creating art my entire life. It feeds my creative outlook giving me a vehicle to place my images. I like to think of my art as healing images, words, patterns, color and light that supports and nurtures me and perhaps gives the viewer peace, wonder and hope. I paint surrounded by Mother Nature s great masses of color where the constantly changing light is an on going challenge to interpret my visual world upon the flat surface . I continue to strive to see how a particular light affects the world, depending on the light conditions and relationships between the light and the shadow areas and how they come together to create the illusion of the subject. I primarily use a palette knife, building upon layers, allowing for the subtle color changes in large masses, which seems to be a never ending search. My varied art forms balance my painting, from the visual beauty of illusion, to the reality of objects in assemblage, beaded jewelry design and hand-painted clothing and t-shirts. My whimsical designs on furniture contrast to the faux wall and floor art. Over the years I have found that time is short. Love fiercely, be in touch with loved ones, do community service and live each day to the fullest. Living an art full life is always in the process of becoming; more willing, determined, forgiving and curious for me, to expand my art, creativity and dreams to explore all possibilities. Box quote (note to Robin, a new quote to come) About the Artist Holly Aloha Jaynes, Daughter of Aloha Carolyn Jaynes, Granddaughter of Carrie Aloha Fall, Aunt of Julie Aloha Jaynes. We are not Hawai ian. My Great Grandmother named her daughter after a friend who moved to Hawaii in the late 1800 s. Aloha is Hawai ian for hello, goodbye and In the spirit of love . pic of holly upper right I am fortunate to live on Boston s North Shore in the historic seaside town of Marblehead, a peninsula surrounded by the ocean and harbors. The light here is wonderful for plein air painting and there are endless land and seascapes, architecture, animals and people for subject matter. I am able to share my artistic capabilities making art with people across the lifespan, encouraging them that they indeed have imagination and the creativity to also live an art full life. . Education/Inspiration I Graduated from Vesper-George School of Art and worked as a graphic designer/art director for several years. I received my BFA from Massachusetts College of Art with a dual major in painting and photography. Going to Lesley University in Cambridge MA dovetailed perfectly with my interests of spirituality, recovery, healing circles and the arts. I received my Masters in Expressive Therapy, which combines the creative arts with healing and psychotherapy. I am inspired by people I meet, places I go and nature in all its variety and beauty. I love to paint on Monhegan Island, Maine, an artist s paradise, a tiny unspoiled island, 12 miles off the coast of Maine. I admire and am inspired by artists Hans Hoffman, Henry Hensche, the Impressionists and many of the early and contemporary photographers, too many to list. Andy Warhol was my hero in the 60 s and Robert Mapplethorpe soon became another. Philosophers, storytellers, people with interesting ideas, new ways of thinking and living life continue to influence me ; Shawn McNiff, Clarisa Pinkola Estes, Margot Adler, Betty Friedan, Bill W., Mary Oliver, Thich Nhat Hann and Judith Black are just a few! They have all given me an AHA! Moment. Interests Time with my partner and our animals, gardening and making garden art, walking in the woods, along the ocean, tap dancing, singing with women s group Calla Lily and riding my purple Harley Community work locally or New Orleans and mobilizing to help others is an important part off my life. I had sent clothing, supplies, but felt I needed to do more . 18 months later, February of 2007, I finally went to New Orleans with the Unitarian Universalist Church of Marblehead MA to do whatever relief was needed. We worked in St. Bernard s Parish where I learned how to mud seams on walls and ceilings, taping ceilings to be painted and most importantly, got to know one of the families and hear them talk about Hurricane Katrina and what happened to them and their neighbors. These are several photos from taking a walk down Guerra Drive I selected several from my exhibit to show people here in the north that the devastation still continues in sections of LA, and we cannot forget these people. I ve also included 3 oil paintings. I saw a photo of The Black Knight of New Orleans in a magazine and I was overwhelmed and compelled to paint the essence of his sadness and survivorship etched in his face. We were on our way to our sister UU church when at a stop, I jumped out of the van to photograph this boat rammed into a tree. All the houses around were still boarded up and this was not a poorer section of town. I also fell in love with the Catahola, a Louisianan brand dog, like Violet , who was lucky to be a survivor. 13 pics NOTE to cyberspace: exhibit list to go into a box like NOLA, where it c an then be scrolled down to view Solo Exhibits 2009 Ballroom Gallery, Hooper Mansion, Marblehead Arts Association, Marblehead MA Mixed Media, oils, watercolor, collage 2009 Stetson Gallery, Unitarian Universalist Church of Marblehead New Works; Watercolor on Yupo & Collage 2007 Stetson Gallery, Unitarian Universalist Church of Marblehead, NOLA; New Orleans 18 Months Later ;The Devastation Continues, painting/photography 2004 Ballroom Gallery, Hooper Mansion, Marblehead Arts Association, Marblehead MA, Pets, Places & People, painting/photography 2003 Gallery at Grovesnor, Salem MA, New Works, painting/photography 2002 Virginia Carten Gallery, Abbot Library, Marblehead MA, Land & Sea; Places I Love, painting/photography 2000 Parlor Gallery, Hooper Mansion, Marblehead Arts Association, Marblehead MA, Images, painting/photography/collage/decorative furniture 1992 Campus Camera Gallery, Boston University, Boston, MA Pictures that Matter, photography 1991 Winchester Library Art Gallery, Winchester MA, photography Interesting People 1986 Stormy Harbor Caf, Provincetown MA, Summer Exhibit P.Town, oil paintings 1985 Modern Times Caf, Cambridge MA, oil paintings 1976 Bebee Public Library, Wakefield MA, oil paintings Group Shows 1997- Marblehead Arts Association, Members Group Shows, oil painting, photography 2010 decorative furniture painting, collage 2008- Marblehead Art Walk, Hestia Gallery, Decorative Furniture Demo, oil paintings, jewelry 2010 The Art Corner, Salem MA, Spankin New , Pets , oil paintings Marblehead Arts Association/Salem Arts Association, Hooper Mansion, Marblehead MA, Art by Association, The Green Show, oil paintings, collage & assemblage 2001- Marblehead Festival of Arts Auction, Ceramic Plate Painting 2010 Marblehead Festival of Arts, plein air painting, oil painting, mixed media exhibits 2007- Salem Arts Association, Salem MA, 2010 Ode to Connell, Mezzuzahs, Salem on Salem,, oil paintings, collage, assemblage 2007 LynnArts, Lynn MA, Paint!
